Guitar Basics is the first step in learning guitar. Before playing chords or songs, every student should understand the different types of guitars, the parts of the instrument, proper posture, tuning, and basic maintenance. A strong foundation helps you learn faster and avoid bad playing habits.


Introduction to Guitar

The guitar is one of the world’s most popular musical instruments. It is used in almost every genre of music, including Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical, Worship, Bollywood, and Folk.

A standard guitar has 6 strings and can be played using a pick or fingers.


Types of Guitars

Acoustic Guitar

The Acoustic Guitar produces sound naturally without any electronic equipment. It is ideal for beginners, singing practice, and fingerstyle playing.

Electric Guitar

An Electric Guitar requires an amplifier to produce sound. It is commonly used in Rock, Metal, Blues, and Lead Guitar performances.

Classical Guitar

A Classical Guitar uses nylon strings, making it softer on the fingers. It is widely used for classical and fingerstyle music.

Parts of a Guitar

Guitar Strings

A standard guitar has six strings.

From the thickest to the thinnest:

6th String – E

5th String – A

4th String – D

3rd String – G

2nd String – B

1st String – E

Easy way to remember:

Finger Numbering

The left-hand fingers are numbered as follows:

1 = Index Finger

2 = Middle Finger

3 = Ring Finger

4 = Little Finger

The thumb is placed behind the guitar neck to provide support.


Correct Sitting Position

  • Sit comfortably on a chair.

  • Keep your back straight.

  • Rest the guitar on your right leg (or left leg for classical style).

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.

  • Avoid bending your neck too much while looking at the fretboard.

Good posture helps prevent fatigue and improves playing accuracy.


Standing Position

  • Use a comfortable guitar strap.

  • Adjust the guitar to waist level.

  • Keep the neck slightly raised.

  • Maintain a relaxed posture.


How to Hold the Pick

  • Hold the pick between your thumb and index finger.

  • Keep only a small portion of the pick exposed.

  • Do not grip it too tightly.

  • Use wrist movement instead of moving your entire arm.


Tuning the Guitar

A properly tuned guitar produces the correct musical notes.
